by Charles Baudelaire (1821 - 1867)

L'avertisseur
Language: French (Français)
Tout homme digne de ce nom
A dans le cœur un Serpent jaune,
Installé comme sur un trône,
Qui, s’il dit : « Je veux ! » répond : « Non ! »

Plonge tes yeux dans les yeux fixes
Des Satyresses ou des Nixes,
La Dent dit : « Pense à ton devoir ! »

Fais des enfants, plante des arbres,
Polis des vers, sculpte des marbres,
La Dent dit : « Vivras-tu ce soir ? »

Quoi qu’il ébauche ou qu’il espère,
L’homme ne vit pas un moment
Sans subir l’avertissement
De l’insupportable Vipère.

Confirmed with Le Parnasse contemporain : receuil de vers nouveaux, premier receuil, [Paris?]: Alphonse Lemerre, 1866, pages 70-71. Also confirmed with Œuvres complètes de Charles Baudelaire, vol. I : Les Fleurs du mal, Spleen et Idéal, Paris: Michel Lévy frères, 1868, page 222.

First published by Alphonse Lemerre in Le Parnasse contemporain : receuil de vers nouveaux, premier receuil, 1866; also appears under Spleen et Idéal as number 91 in the 1868 edition of Les Fleurs du mal.

Note: in the 1866 edition, there were several typos of 'n' instead of 'u':
Line 3-2 - "scnlpte des arbres", line 4-1: "Qnoi qn'il ébanche ou qn’il" and line 4-2: "nn moment".
